Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) play a crucial role in addressing various social issues, including women's health and hygiene. Over the years, NGOs have driven initiatives and championed campaigns on the need for affordable sanitary pads in the country. In response to this plea for help, Ohhema Sanitary Pads has introduced a special discount on their products, aimed at supporting NGOs acquire and provide free sanitary pads to girls in underprivileged areas.

The distribution of sanitary pads, a seemingly simple act has a profound impact, not only on the health and well-being of women, but also on their empowerment.

NGOs purchasing and distributing sanitary pads improves;

Menstrual Hygiene: Access to menstrual hygiene products is a fundamental right, yet millions of women and girls worldwide lack the resources to manage their menstrual cycles safely and hygienically. NGOs can bridge this gap by purchasing Ohhema sanitary pads and making them accessible to those in need. This ensures that women go through their periods with dignity and without health risks.

Educational Opportunities:
Access to sanitary pads can be a game-changer for girls’ education. When girls have the necessary hygiene products, they are less likely to miss school during their periods. This results in improved educational opportunities and outcomes, ultimately empowering them to break the cycle of poverty.

Health and Hygiene;
Inadequate menstrual hygiene can lead to various health issues, including infections. NGOs that provide sanitary pads help prevent these health problems, contributing to the overall well-being of women and girls.

Impact of NGOs Purchasing and Distributing Sanitary Pads

The impact of NGOs purchasing and distributing sanitary pads goes beyond hygiene; it transforms the lives of women and girls by empowering them with education, health, and economic opportunities.

It is a tangible way to ensure that every woman and girl can navigate menstruation safely and with dignity. By supporting such initiatives, we take a step closer to a more equitable and inclusive world.

National No Apologies Period Day – June 9, 2023

Date

National No Apologies Period Day is observed every year on June 9. For far too long, people who menstruate have been shamed and made to feel guilty simply for having periods. We live in a culture that teaches us from a young age that periods are something that should be hidden and not discussed in public, which is an insane concept considering that half of the world’s population has periods!

This important day seeks to dismantle the culture that has made menstruators ashamed of their own bodies. Periods are healthy, important, and natural. It’s time to do away with these old patriarchal notions and stop all the apologies. Period.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL NO APOLOGIES PERIOD DAY

We are now entering an age where body positivity is encouraged, with people becoming more and more open-minded about normal, healthy bodily functions like periods. Most girls will start their periods between the ages of 10 and 16 or two years after the first signs of puberty. They will continue till the ages of 40 to 50. To help the world move on from this period apology mindset, the National No Apologies Period Day was established in June 2021 by Midol, which makes period pain relieving medicine.

According to Midol, 62% of menstruators below 40 years of age have at some point in their lives apologized for their periods or period symptoms. For ages now, people assigned females at birth have been trained to apologize for everything, even things they cannot help and that are up to mother nature. From missing class to lack of intimacy or just overall wanting to disappear, women are always saying sorry for their own bodies and the uncontrollable period symptoms that come with it.

Periods are a natural phenomenon but many cultures throughout history have failed to, or have not even attempted to understand them. In fact, people have considered menstrual blood to be a curse throughout history. In Roman times, people even believed that it had the power to destroy crops and make wine sour.

Between the fifth and the 15th centuries, women used rags as makeshift pads, leading to the term “on the rag” becoming popular for menstruation. During medieval times, people were of the view that period cramps were a reminder of Eve’s original sin and something that women should be made to suffer through. No pain relief, in the form of natural and herbal remedies, was made available to the women back then on purpose — almost to punish them.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL NO APOLOGIES PERIOD DAY

  1. Explore different options

Look up the different types of things available in the market for menstruation. While sanitary pads and tampons are the common ones, menstrual cups are quickly becoming popular for their use and environment-friendliness.

  2. Learn more about your body

Research and educate yourself on your own body and your periods. Track your cycle so you can be better prepared and observe the changes that your body goes through while you’re on your periods.

  3. Take on the tampon tax

Raise awareness about what’s popularly called the “tampon tax” and what an unnecessary practice it is. Period products are subject to a state sales tax in most U.S. states, despite efforts to ban it country-wide. Write to your representative to try and repeal this tax.

WHY NATIONAL NO APOLOGIES PERIOD DAY IS IMPORTANT

  1. It removes the period taboo

A lot of us were told to hide our pads and tampons as kids so no one would get to know we were on our periods. Kids are also told that periods are dirty and many cultures forbid women from entering the kitchen and performing religious activities while they’re menstruating. National No Apologies Period Day helps get rid of this stigma.

  2. It allows us to share information

Because of the hush-hush culture, we grew up in, many of us are hesitant to discuss periods and any problems we might have related to it with friends, family, and even doctors. The day reminds us that periods are a normal bodily function and we should be actively seeking and sharing information about our bodies with other menstruators.

  3. Pads and tampons are a necessity

While pads, tampons, and menstrual cups are readily available to most of us, many people around the world don’t have access to these and consider them luxuries. Lack of access to these often leads to health problems and in some cases, even death in underdeveloped regions of the world.

IWD 2023: Ohhema La Carte Donates Over 1,500 Sanitary Pads to Kayayos

Ohhema, subsidiary of La Carte LTD, in partnership with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), donated over 1,500 Ohhema! Sanitary pads to Kayayos in commemoration of the 2023 International Women's Day (IWD). The donation and sensitization program were held under the theme, ‘Empowering Kayayos with knowledge on good feminine hygiene and reproductive health care’.

La Carte LTD, the sole producer of Ohhema! Sanitary pads, mission is to help educate young woman about the importance of menstrual hygiene and general well-being. The program saw Kayayos girls receive practical training on practicing good hygiene, including properly using and disposing of sanitary napkins.

Abena Dobmaah Amoanu Arthur, Project Manager for La Carte Company Limited, highlighted the importance of creating awareness on menstrual hygiene and female wellbeing. She emphasized that “Ohhema’s! Goal is to ensure that no woman or girl goes without basic sanitary materials and our duty is to motivate young girls to practice good hygiene. Our greatest interest in operation is to contribute to the creation of awareness on menstrual hygiene and female wellbeing. As part of our obligations, we want to reach out to Kayayo girls who are obviously a greater part of the marginalized group who have a greater challenge in having access to menstrual materials,” she explained.

However, recent statistics have shown that sanitary pad taxes in Ghana have risen past 40%, driving up the cost of sanitary pads to an exorbitant level that is difficult for adolescent girls and women with lower incomes to afford.

Consequently, made a clarion call to the government to remove taxes on pads to make them affordable for the ordinary Ghanaian woman

“We are urging the government to either lower the tax on sanitary pads or remove taxes altogether in light of this urgent problem. If taken into account, sanitary pads will be less expensive, allowing every young woman in the country, regardless of economic status, to afford what she needs to experience menstruation and, as a result, practice menstrual hygiene,” she said.

Mariam Mensah, Head of the Social Welfare and Community Development Department at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), applauded the collaboration with Ohhema!, which is in line with the AMA’s core function of initiating programs aimed at providing basic infrastructure for people within the assembly. She reiterated the importance of supporting any cause that seeks to help achieve these goals.

“It is the AMA’s priority to improve the well-being and healthy living among women in the Accra metro and partnering with this initiative is one of them. We are solely in support and appreciate Ohhema! for this generous deed she said.

Prior to this, there had been several discussions with the Kayayos about what they would like to do to get them off the street. The majority of them want to pursue vocational training, and the AMA is mobilizing the necessary resources to fund and assist these women in achieving their goals.

The 2023 theme for International Women’s Day, #EmbraceEquity, which calls for the recognition that each person has different circumstances, and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome. Ohhema! donation and sensitization program is a step towards achieving this goal and improving the well-being and healthy living among women in the Accra metro.
